$20M Founder-Operators Will Burnout if They Don't Do This

Companion to the MaxLife episode with Ben Laws

Born from Ben's teaching on what happens after the number stops working.

01

Whose Scoreboard Is It?

A lot of ambition is really an old promise to prove somebody wrong. Sit with this one: when you picture finally making it, whose face shows up? Whose opinion are you still measuring against?

If I'm honest, part of me is still proving ________________________ to ________________________.
02

Where It Feels Like Pushing

There are two ways to grow: pushing (chasing, forcing, grinding) and pulling (work that draws you forward and seems to come to you). Circle every place your business feels like a push right now, then add your own.

Forcing deals that don't quite fitGrinding through work I've outgrownSaying yes to the wrong clientsChasing a number to feel finishedPerforming success for other peopleWhite-knuckling every week
03

The Number That Was Supposed to Fix It

Write the number you've been telling yourself will make it all feel worth it. Then answer the harder question: the last time you hit a milestone, how long did the feeling actually last? What showed up after it faded?

My number is __________________. The last milestone felt good for about __________________.
04

The Alignment T-Chart

Money is a tool; joy is evergreen. Split your work into two columns. Left: what you'd keep doing even if it paid nothing. Right: what drains you and only survives because it pays. Be specific. Name real tasks, real clients, real meetings.

Aligned (fills me)
the work I'd do for free
Unaligned (drains me)
the work only money justifies
05

The Sacred Cow That Dies First

Look at your unaligned column. Something in there feels untouchable, and everyone (maybe just you) treats it as sacred. Growth usually starts the day one sacred cow dies. Pick yours and put a date on it. Example: By August 1st, I will kill doing every final walkthrough myself, and I'll handle what it was protecting by giving my ops lead a punch-list standard and reviewing photos weekly.

By ______________ , I will kill __________________ , and I'll handle what it was protecting by __________________.
You just drew the line most founders never draw, the one between what fills you and what you keep doing to prove a point. Work the aligned side and the pull takes over: better clients, easier deals, money that chases you. That's not soft talk, it's how the game actually works past a certain number.
