How to Raise Entrepreneurs: Mark Gaunya’s Blueprint for Business & Parenting

Companion to the MaxLife episode with Mark Gaunya

Mark Gaunya built a company and raised three entrepreneurial kids on one idea: rules are someone else's way of doing things, but principles are the few lines you won't cross, and inside those lines you get to make your own rules.

01

Renting Or Creating

Look at how you actually spend your working hours. Which parts are you selling your time by the hour, and which parts are you creating something people would pay for whether or not you showed up at an office?

02

Value Someone Would Pay For

Mark says you don't need a job, you need to find something society needs and charge for it. What's one real problem you could solve for people that they'd happily pay you to fix?

People would pay me to help them with ___.
03

Your Few Hard Lines

Principles are the boundaries you'll never cross, but inside them you make your own rules. What are the two or three lines you genuinely won't cross, no matter what the money or the opportunity is? Circle every answer that fits, then write your own.

Tell the truth even when it costs meMy family comes before the dealNever charge for something I don't believe inDo the work I said I'd doTreat people the same up and down the ladderKeep time for the things that matter
04

Guardrail, Not Driver

Mark parents like a guardrail: he lets people hit the rail and learn instead of grabbing the wheel. Where in your life (with a kid, a team member, yourself) are you grabbing the wheel when you should let them try, fail, and learn, and just be there if it goes bad?

05

Jump

Mark's whole answer to people stuck on the sideline is one word: jump. Not a five-year plan, one step. What's the single thing you'll do today toward the value you named in prompt 02?

Look at what you wrote. The freedom Mark talks about isn't reckless. It lives inside a handful of lines you've decided not to cross. He'd tell you what he tells everyone sitting on a good idea: the time you can't get more of is right now. Take the one step from prompt 05 today.
